The Weekly CMO Strategy Brief · Phil Carpenter
Where good leads go quiet.
Before you spend more money getting people to reach out, look at what happened to the last ten who did.
Pull up ten recent inquiries that didn’t turn into customers. Emails, quote requests, missed calls, whatever you have. You’re looking for the point where the conversation stopped.
Check what actually happened.
- How long did it take to get a useful reply?
- Did the person get an answer to their question?
- Was there a clear next step?
- If they went quiet, did anyone follow up?
Some people were never a fit. Others may have chosen someone else. But if you find good inquiries sitting without a reply or a next step, you’ve found something you can work on with the demand you already have.
Try one change this week.
Pick the most common gap. Give one person responsibility for it and agree on a simple response process. For example: every qualified quote request gets a personal response by the next business day, with an answer and a clear next step.
Review the next ten comparable inquiries. Track how many become real conversations and how many buy. Ten is a useful starting point for spotting a problem, not enough to prove a lasting improvement. Keep watching as more come through.
When this is useful.
This check is worth doing when you already receive relevant inquiries. If hardly anyone knows your business exists, start with how you’ll reach the right people.
If you’re unsure where your own customers are getting stuck, bring that to a conversation.
